The earliest Greek civilizations thrived nearly 4,000 years ago. Yet, their culture still impacts our lives today in the arts, philosophy, science, math, literature, and politics. Gifts from the Greeks include trial by jury, roots of democracy, Greek columns, Greek myths, Aesop's fables, and the Olympic games, to name a few! The ancient Greeks spoke the same language. They believed in the same gods. But ancient Greece was not a country. It was a collection of city-states. Each city-state had its own government and its own way of doing things.
